This craft has been passed down through generations of artisans — the same techniques your grandparents' grandparents would recognize, still practiced by hand today. No machines weave the fiber. Preparing the Wooden Frame

Durable wood — palm, teak, or neem — is chosen for the frame. Four thick legs are joined with side-beams into a sturdy rectangle, and small holes are drilled along the inner beams to anchor the weaving rope.

Processing the Palm Fiber

Mature palm mattai are harvested, soaked in water for days, then beaten with wooden mallets to loosen the pulp. The beaten fiber is combed through sharp iron spikes to separate clean, stiff strands, which are sun-dried and sorted by length and thickness.

Spinning into Ropes

Loose fiber strands are rolled and twisted tightly by hand — or on a simple spinning wheel — into rope. New strands are added continuously during twisting to create one long, uniform, unbreakable length.

Weaving the Base Structure

The rope is tied to one end of the frame and stretched lengthwise as the warp, kept extremely tight so the bed won't sag. It is then woven crosswise as the weft — over and under the vertical strands — in a tight grid.

Creating the Diamond Pattern

Finishing Touches

Stray fibers are neatly trimmed away, and the finished cot is lightly sprayed with water and dried — shrinking the rope slightly so the entire weave tightens and becomes even sturdier.
